We've covered 15 of the best body creams,

However...

It is quite impossible for me to list every brand out there that can help brighten the skin but knowing the ingredients to look out for serves as a guide to choosing the body cream for your skin concerns. Let’s touch on the various ingredients that help to brighten one’s complexion, combat hyperpigmentation and reduce dark spots / discolorations.

What Ingredients are good for brightening the skin?

Let’s have a look at them:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is scientifically known as ascorbic acid. You might see this super ingredient labeled as L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, etc. in our body creams or lotions. It is efficacious from 5 - 20% concentration. Vitamin C helps to brighten the skin in many ways:

  • By protecting the skin from photo damage and stabilizing free radicals on the skin when applied.
  • By helping the body to produce collagen. This is important for the skin because an increased collagen production has been linked with a more younger looking skin.
  • Studies have also shown vitamin C to reduce wrinkling, when applied topically
  • By inhibiting the production of melanin, vitamin C helps to fade dark spots, hyperpigmentation and brightens the skin’s appearance.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a water soluble form of vitamin B3. It’s mostly paired with other active ingredients to complement their effects. Niacinamide can help to brighten the skin and fade hyperpigmentation by regulating our melanin transfer. It also boosts collagen production to improve skin texture and even skin tone.

Kojic acid

Kojic acid is gotten from natural sources. An effective alternative to hydroquinone, it's a by-product of the fermentation of a certain fungi and its efficacy starts from 2% - 4% concentration. It brightens the skin by protecting the skin from environmental stressors because it's an antioxidant and by inhibiting tyrosinase enzymes (an enzyme that controls the production of melanin).

Azelaic acid

This is a naturally occuring acid gotten from wheat, barley and rye grains. It suppresses melanin production and is very effective at concentrations ranging from 10 - 20%. It's a safe ingredient to use during pregnancy to treat or prevent hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Arbutin

This is a molecule that was extracted from dried bearberry, blueberry or pear tree leaves. It is a skin brightening ingredient that prevents the formation of melanin. It’s considered to be a natural form of hydroquinone but less potent. It can be found in serums, creams, and lotions in ranging concentrations of 0.5 - 2%.

Retinoids (Topical Vitamin A)

There’s a retinoid for everyone! That's right! And this is because it's one of the active ingredients backed up by scientific evidence for combating hyperpigmentation by increasing cell turnover and cell renewal (by bringing newer, healthier skin cells to the surface). There are different forms of retinoids. There’s the more popular OTC (over-the-counter) actives that are found in creams and lotions; for example retinyl palmitate, retinaldehyde, retinol, retinal, etc. very effective at concentrations starting from .05 - 1%.

Tranexamic acid

A derivative of the amino acid lysine, tranexamic acid has shown promising effects on melasma (skin discoloration triggered by hormonal changes). It inhibits melanin production, which in turn reduces dark patches and brightens the skin. It’s most effective at a concentration of 3 - 5%.

Turmeric

All thanks to the active component, Curcumin in this popular spice. Turmeric (curcumin) has shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties that can manage hyperpigmentation, signs of aging, etc. it can be effective in creams and lotions starting from 5 - 15% concentration.

Papaya

Papaya contains an enzyme called papain, that has skin lightening properties and would clear dark patches, blemishes and pigmentation. Papaya extract is also a great source of vitamin C.

Exfoliating Acids

Exfoliating acids like glycolic acid, mandelic acids, etc. help to remove the dead skin cells that have the excess pigment on the surface of the skin, revealing a newer skin cell. This process, over time  evens your skin tone. A concentration of > 10% is often a good start.

Conclusion

So, there you have it! The best body creams for fair skin in Nigeria, alongside ingredients found in these creams that help brighten the skin. Catch you next time in my next article. It's bye for now.
