You’ve tried the salads. You’ve counted the almonds. You’ve stared at a sad chicken breast on a bed of arugula and wondered why you still feel like a deflated balloon by 3pm.
So now you’re curious about the carnivore diet: the one where women eat steak, eggs and butter and somehow report flatter stomachs, clearer skin and zero food noise. Sounds fake, right? I thought so too, until I tested it for 60 days.
This guide gives you the beginner-friendly version women stick to, not the hardcore bodybuilder version that has you gnawing on raw liver by day three. You’ll get a full 7-day meal plan, a grocery list, honest side effects, and the mistakes that make most beginners quit in week one.

What is the carnivore diet, really?

The carnivore diet strips your plate down to animal foods only: meat, fish, eggs, animal fats, and, depending on which version you follow, some dairy. No grains, no beans, no vegetables, no fruit, no sugar. Yes, that includes your beloved oat milk latte. I’ll give you a moment.
Think of it as keto’s stricter older sister. Keto lets you keep avocado and broccoli. Carnivore says: nope, animal products only. If you’ve already experimented with the keto approach, you’ll find the transition surprisingly smooth because your body already knows how to burn fat for fuel.
Ever wondered why women specifically report doing well on it? Many women deal with bloating, PCOS symptoms, autoimmune flares and relentless sugar cravings. Pulling out every plant irritant and every gram of sugar at once works like a giant elimination diet, and the results show up fast.
The three levels of carnivore (pick one, don’t guess)
- Level 1, “carnivore-ish” (best for beginners): Meat, eggs, fish, dairy, plus coffee, spices, and the occasional splash of cream. Sustainable. Your social life survives.
- Level 2, standard carnivore: Meat, fish, eggs, butter, salt. Minimal dairy. No coffee for some people. This is where most long-termers land.
- Level 3, the lion diet: Ruminant meat (beef, lamb), salt, and water. That’s it. Strictly an elimination protocol for serious autoimmune issues. Do NOT start here.
IMO, 90% of women who quit carnivore quit because they jumped straight to Level 3 on a Monday morning with a full work week ahead. Start at Level 1. You can always tighten later.
Does it work? What the research says

Let’s be honest: the carnivore diet doesn’t have 40 years of gold-standard clinical trials behind it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
But we’re not flying completely blind either. Harvard researchers surveyed 2,029 people who ate carnivore for at least six months, and the results, published in Current Developments in Nutrition, showed high satisfaction, better wellbeing, and metabolic markers that came back far more favourable than anyone expected.
